Wildflower Planting on Verges
🌼 Wildflower Planting Update from Newbiggin Town Council 🌼
Last year, wildflower planting was introduced across Newbiggin after being approved by members at the Environmental Committee meeting in February 2024. Now in its second year, we’re excited to see perennials emerging in areas from Woodhorn Village to Woodhorn Allotments and along North Seaton Road.
Following this year’s Environmental Committee meeting, further planting has been approved for Woodlea and Central Parkway. Work begins this week, with WL Straughan and Son Ltd will carry out mechanical land preparation and seeding, while we coordinate with Northumberland County Council on grass-cutting arrangements.
Why wildflowers? 🌍🐝
Road verges filled with native wildflowers boost biodiversity, adapt better to environmental changes, strengthen ecological connections, and support vital ecosystem services like pollination. Often underappreciated, these green spaces are vital habitats for wildlife, helping to protect rare and declining species.
Let’s work together to make Newbiggin bloom! 🌸
