Remembering Alan Thompson
We are saddened by the news of the death of former Newbiggin by the Sea Town Councillor Alan Thompson.
Alan served our community as a Town Councillor from the inaugural meeting of Newbiggin by the Sea Town Council in June 2009 through to 2021, Alan was Mayor for two consecutive terms, 2019-2020 and 2020-21 – a challenging period marked by the Covid-19 pandemic. His service with the Town Council was preceded by representing Newbiggin by the Sea as a Councillor of the former Wansbeck District Council from 1979-1991 and 1999-2009. He also served as a Councillor for Northumberland County Council from 2008-2013.
Alan was a advocate for bringing regeneration opportunities to Newbiggin by the Sea and served our community with commitment and dedication throughout this tenures with the three authorities.
Beyond his political responsibilities, Alan dedicated his time as a Trustee for the Newbiggin by the Sea Partnership, which supports the personal growth of local children through music education and instrument provision at Grace Darling Campus. He also served as an active Trustee for Triplett’s Woodhorn Charity and Ashington Leisure Partnership.
The Town Council extends its deepest condolences to Alan’s wife, Pamela, and his family during this difficult time. His unwavering service and dedication to Newbiggin by the Sea will be forever remembered.
