Donation to Residents Association

Last night Councillor Alison Sutherland, Deputy Mayor of Newbiggin by the Sea Town Council, visited Newbiggin Colliery Residents Association and presented them with a donation of £300.

The Residents Association had applied to the Council for a small donation towards transport costs for their social activities.

Despite being called the ‘Newbiggin Colliery Residents Association’,  members actually come from all over Newbiggin by the Sea. They have 25 members at present.    They meet informally once a fortnight at the Women’s Institute Hall on a Thursday evening for a coffee, nibbles, catch up, and games like bingo. They also arrange trips and days out for members

Cllr Sutherland commented, ‘I thoroughly enjoyed meeting the Residents Association, they were incredibly friendly and welcoming.  Groups like this are important to our community as they support the residents and reduce social isolation‘.

Isabel Morgan, Secretary to the Residents Association thanked the Town Council for the donation and said, ‘Our members are mostly pensioners but we do welcome all ages – it’s good for our members morale to get out of the house and come together for a bit of company, especially at the moment when everyone is worrying about the costs of heating and food‘.

The Residents Association will now break for Christmas but will resume their meetings on 5th January at 7pm and they welcome new members to join them.

The Residents Association don’t have a website and aren’t on social media, they mostly rely on word of mouth for new members to join them.
